50 Ways You Can Make A Positive Impact In 2017

Another year is coming to an end, and we should all take some time to reflect on 2016. How can we make 2017 even better?

Many New Year’s resolutions consist of pledges to lose weight, spend less money, or travel— and while these are all very respectable and worthwhile resolutions, I have something different in mind for my own.

My New Year’s resolution is simple: I just want to be a better person.

I think we should all work to make positive changes— both big and small —in the world around us next year. Even taking actions that require minimal effort on our part could make someone else’s day. I have compiled a list of 50 ways you and I can make a positive impact next year. I will strive to be a better person in 2017, and I encourage you to do the same. Who knows? You could help someone more than you’d ever realize.

  1. Volunteer for a cause you are passionate about.
  2. Smile at someone you don’t know.
  3. Read a book to a child.
  4. Start recycling (or recycle more often).
  5. Make an effort to be nicer to people.
  6. Write a thank-you note to someone who has helped you recently.
  7. Assist a friend or family member with a chore.
  8. Donate clothing you don’t wear.
  9. Give a pep talk to a friend who is struggling.
  10. Pick trash up off the ground when you see it.
  11. Donate blood.
  12. Become CPR certified.
  13. Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth.
  14. Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  15. Bake cookies for your neighbors.
  16. Adopt from an animal shelter.
  17. Thank a service member or veteran.
  18. Thank a police officer.
  19. Speak out against racism, sexism, xenophobia, or homophobia.
  20. Hold the door for a stranger.
  21. Use a reusable water bottle.
  22. Be a courteous driver.
  23. Take shorter showers.
  24. Stay informed on politics.
  25. Tell your loved ones that you love them.
  26. Say “please” and “thank you” more often.
  27. Become a mentor.

  29. Use fabric shopping bags instead of paper or plastic ones.
  30. Use your phone less and interact with the world more.

    A few of my goals for 2017 are on this list. Including downsizing my wardrobe items and donating the bulk of it to charity.

  6. I think it’s so important to do positive things for others and this is a really great list! I’m going to continue to do any of them that I do already and really try to any that I don’t.
